RICS Parliamentary Affairs Gives Presentation to matrics Suffolk
On the 18th June 2012, the RICS matrics Suffolk group enjoyed a presentation from RICS Headquarters to set out what the RICS is influencing in Parliament and to engage with user groups on what topics affect surveyors. The matrics group is an open group of surveyors in Suffolk that offers a support network to those going through the training process or with 10 or less years post becoming a Chartered Surveyor.
The evening was attended by a mix of surveyors from across Suffolk where we were invited to feedback on what concerns or issues we face as Surveyors in Suffolk. Some of the key issues that were discussed where the branding of the RICS Surveyor and generating awareness to the public the benefits of using an RICS Surveyor, this was discussed in the broader context than just surveys for homebuyers and included discussions on Property Management, Valuations, advising on Green Deal and its implementation and home improvements as some of the items.
It was understood that the RICS are actively working in parliament to influence the decisions made and items debated, but it was generally agreed that the communication of this could be better disseminated to its members,
Another topic was ‘red tape’ and does this prevent economic growth and development.
We also discussed business rates and the potential to reduction. It was felt that the application of business rates to empty premises lead to restricting speculative development and that it had a negative impact on new start up businesses as this was often a cost not considered initially and restricts the viability of the potential business. The reduction applied to charities lead to an increase in promotion to this sector and a knock on effect on the vibrancy of the high street.
This debate was an opportunity for the RICS to receive feedback on what affects the regions Surveyors and potential areas for growth to create a vibrant and sustainable sector.
